In this article, we will cover which versions of Windows are supported by Mailbird, and why certain older versions of Windows will no longer be supported by Mailbird.
Mailbird and .NET
Mailbird is built on the Microsoft .NET Framework, and so in turn we rely on Microsoft to provide ongoing support for each version of Windows as well. This means that we will support any versions of Windows which Microsoft itself is still providing support for.
If Microsoft no longer provides support for a specific version of Windows, we may also be forced to no longer support it, but since we want Mailbird to be compatible with as many versions of Windows as possible, we will only drop support for older versions of Windows if it's absolutely necessary, for example in order to stay up to date on important security updates in later versions of the .NET Framework, without which our customers may encounter security flaws or vulnerabilities.
Each version of Windows has a product lifecycle, beyond which Microsoft will no longer provide support - information on this lifecycle can be found by visiting the following link: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/13853/windows-lifecycle-fact-sheet.
Mailbird and Chromium
Mailbird also uses Google Chromium, as its internal browser (which is the same technology used in Google Chrome) - this is used both for viewing and writing emails, as well as for some of our apps and other internal browser requirements. Therefore, Mailbird's compatibility with Windows also depends on which versions of Windows are supported by Chromium.
Unfortunately Chromium no longer supports any version of Windows below Windows 10, and this means that Windows 8/8.1, 7 etc. are sadly no longer supported by Mailbird for reasons which are entirely beyond our control.
Supported Versions of Windows
Below is an up-to-date list of Windows versions currently supported by Mailbird:
- Windows 10
- Windows 11
