๐ง What Are POP3 and IMAP?
POP3 and IMAP are two different email protocols used to access and manage emails. Each works in a different way, and understanding the difference can help you choose the best setup for your needs.
๐ Why IMAP Is Recommended
IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) is the more flexible and modern option, and the one we generally recommend.
It allows you to:
-
Access your email from multiple devices (e.g., laptop, desktop, tablet, smartphone)
-
Keep your messages synced across all devices
-
Store your emails on the server rather than downloading them
With IMAP, you can check your email from anywhere and always see the same messages and folders across all your devices.
๐พ How POP3 Works (and Its Limitations)
POP3 (Post Office Protocol 3) downloads your emails from the server to your device, and then deletes them from the server.
This means:
-
Emails are stored only on the device where they were downloaded
-
If you check your inbox from another device or email client, your emails may appear missing
-
Email syncing between devices is not possible
While POP3 can be useful in specific cases (like for limited internet access), itโs generally not recommended for individuals who want to check their emails from multiple devices.
